The term lameness is used to describe abnormal gait due to pain or restriction in range of movement. Due to the anatomy of horses and large amount of weight carried on their thin legs and small feet, lameness is common in horses at some time or another.
A lameness workup is used to find the cause of the gait deficit through a process of elimination using flexion tests, nerve blocks and radiography or ultrasound.
Most of the time this is a fairly simple procedure and the cause can be identified and dealt with accordingly. On occasion however this can be a frustrating and lengthy process, sometimes with the root of the lameness difficult to isolate. Cape Vet has years of experience in assessing, treating and managing lameness ensuring that your horses are back in the competition arena or out on the trails as soon as possible.
